Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (TCS) was formed in 1968 and is headquartered in Mumbai, India. Originally a captive provider to other Tata Group entities, today it is an IT, consulting, services and BPO organization that forms part of The Tata Group, India’s largest private business conglomerate. TCS has grown rapidly throughout its 48-year history.  

In 1973 it pioneered offshore operations when it began activity in the U.S. Growth in the 1980s and 1990s was due to a number of factors such as the U.S. embracing outsourcing and the Y2K build-up. 

TCS is addressing the next generation application outsourcing market through five initiatives. These initiatives are focused around tailored offerings, productization, intelligent automation, service integration and utility based models.  

By launching ignio in mid-2015, TCS put itself to the forefront among its competitors in leveraging cognitive capabilities and automation in delivering application outsourcing services. This provided it with an avenue to maintain its application outsourcing footprint and increase its profitability by de-coupling headcount and revenues.
